Food trade in a post-COVID-19 world: More digitalisation and fewer trade barriers demanded by experts

24 Nov 2021

An expert panel convened at the Asia Pacific Economic Council (APEC) has highlighted the need to help all firms, both large and small, to embrace digitalisation to ensure survival, and also called upon nations to ‘unwind’ on trade restrictions as soon as possible.

According to the panel, given the enormous shift that has been seen towards online shopping during the pandemic, it is essential that all food firms are able to be included in this shift to ensure a healthy commercial environment - not just the bigger firms with the budget to do so.

“The COVID-19 pandemic impacted all sectors seriously, with an especially massive impact on international trading of all items [including] food and beverage products,” said DHgate’s Chair and CEO Diane Wang.

“Overall, we saw a steep downturn in global trade, which dropped by some 9% in 2020, as well as the collapse of traditional supply chains all over the world which further deteriorated trade.”

Food supply chain recovery: Sector crucial for economies to get back on track after pandemic pressures - APEC ministers

17 Nov 2021

Top-ranking ministers from the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) have underlined that food supply chains and open trade in the region are crucial to boosting economic revival post-pandemic – but huge challenges persist around tariffs, protectionist policies and simmering tensions between major nations

“The ongoing impact of COVID-19 is [still] being felt throughout [all of the] region’s food supply chains [more than a year after the pandemic hit],” they said after the event.

“[The conclusion was that] there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to achieving well-functioning, sustainable food systems, which are critical to people’s health and well-being and the success of [all APEC] economies.

“[Food trade policy in particular] has been recognised as an effective tool for pursuing sustainable economic development and enhancing [public] access to goods and services that support low-emission and climate-resilient economies.”

COVID-19 and imports: Sharp pricing and localisation strategies key for F&B brands to gain ASEAN entry

15 Nov 2021

International food and beverage brands looking to gain a foothold in the ASEAN market via local distributors need to step up their game when pitching pricing and localisation strategies, as a new survey has revealed waning interest in new product launches.

The survey was conducted by the ASEAN Food & Drink Exporters Forum in September 2021, where it surveyed over 1,000 food and beverage importers across Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand.

The surveyed companies included many major F&B distributors such as Indonesia’s PT Sukanda Djaya (which distributes Bega, Ovaltine, Meiji, Lipton, etc.), Malaysia’s Pikzern (Ballantyne, Nuttelex, MilkLab etc.), Philippines’ Silverware Corporation (Bundaberg, Beereberg, Bulla etc.), Singapore’s H.L. Yong (Contadina, SW, La Molisana, etc.) and Thailand’s Global Food Products (Mission, Kraft, San Remo, Wattie’s, etc.).

“Surprisingly, when we asked these companies whether they were still reviewing new F&B distribution opportunities in their ASEAN markets, the percentage dropped by 8.2% this year to 88.5% compared to in 2020’s 96.7% during the thick of the pandemic,” ASEAN Food & Drink Exporters Forum Chair Cameron Gordon said.

ASEAN soft drink reformulation: Coca-Cola highlights rising post-pandemic regional demand for healthier options

5 Oct 2021

Beverage giant Coca-Cola has observed a rise in demand for beverages with zero-sugar and reduced-sugar formulations in the South East Asian region, which became even more pronounced after the COVID-19 pandemic hit.

The firm says this was driver behind the launch of new reformulated recipes for several of its most-popular products.

Although the sugar-reduction trend was already on the rise in the soft drinks industry even before COVID-19 hit, the pandemic has had a significant impact on consumers examining their health and lifestyles, and thus their food and drink intake, leading to a further increase in demand for healthier beverage options.

“Consumers [have been] taking their health more seriously during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has accelerated the trend towards healthier options as more [they] are aware of the food and beverages they are consuming, while also adopting healthier lifestyles,” Coca-Cola Singapore and Malaysia Marketing Manager Rustam Gabaydullin told FoodNavigator-Asia.

Making a comeback: Thailand hails food industry growth after COVID-19 slump – but urges firms to maintain vigilance

4 Oct 2021

The Thai food industry has seen growth in both the manufacturing and export sectors so far in 2021 after overcoming last year’s pandemic slump – but the authorities are urging domestic food firms not to drop their guard yet.

The Thai Ministry of Industry (MOI) reported earlier this month that the local food industry had performed impressively in the first seven months of 2021 (January to July) despite continued COVID-19 challenges, particularly in the food exports and food manufacturing sectors.

“Thailand’s food industry has now returned to a state of growth and expansion after seeing some shrinking last year,” said MOI Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit via a formal statement.

COVID-19 and ‘junk food’ ads: Children’s added exposure during pandemic a ‘major concern’ – experts

28 Sept 2021

The increase of online ‘junk food’ marketing to children since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic poses a long term-health risk and has become a major public health concern, claim experts.

Many children throughout the Asia Pacific region have been confined to their homes as part of COVID-19 related lockdowns since the pandemic hit last year, and throughout this time have increasingly turned to their mobile and other digital devices for entertainment to fill up the time they would normally spend at school or activities.

This has resulted in them becoming more likely to come across unhealthy food advertisements online, which are currently not regulated in most countries.

“There is evidence that food companies have increased their marketing since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic – particularly through online channels,” WHO Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention at Deakin University Senior Research Fellow Associate Professor Gary Sacks told FoodNavigator-Asia.

Probably not the best situation: Carlsberg Malaysia ‘conservative and cautious’ about 2021 outlook due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns

30 Aug 2021

Carlsberg Malaysia has posted a highly cautious outlook for the rest of 2021 despite successfully growing its net profits in the first half of the year, citing ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in Malaysia and impacts from its enforced brewery closure.

In the company’s H12021 financial results announcement, Carlsberg Malaysia said it had posted flat revenue (+0.5%) in the first six months of the year (January to June 2021) to hit RM881.2mn (US$208.5mn), but managed to grow net profits by 23.9% to RM103.6mn (US$12.5mn).

However, according to Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd (Carlsberg Malaysia) Managing Director Stefano Clini, the rise in profits is due to having come from a very low base in the previous year.

“MCO 1.0 in 2020 saw the suspension of brewing and distribution for seven weeks with on-trade sales significantly impacted, [and in this year we also] accelerated the growth with new product launches before the abrupt disruption in June (when Malaysia implemented the Full Movement Control Order (FMCO)”, said Clini.

Lessons from COVID-19: Japan strengthens food security measures to prevent shortages in a crisis

18 Aug 2021

The Japanese government is seeking to strengthen its food security measures in the wake of COVID-19 supply constraints to prevent product shortages in a future crisis.

According to the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about news risks threatening the local and global food supply which need to be addressed, including the strengthening of local food security measures.

“Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, although there was no shortage of raw material supply in Japan, the production, manufacturing and distribution of food products could not keep up with the rapid changes in demand [at both a] commercial and household level,” MAFF said via a formal statement.

Sabinsa’s curcumin and black pepper extract combo results in faster recovery of COVID-19 symptoms – clinical trial

3 Aug 2021

A combination of Sabinsa’s curcumin and piperine (black pepper extract) showed faster symptomatic recovery among COVID-19 patients in India, according to findings from a recent clinical trial.

In the double-blind, randomised controlled clinical trial which involved 140 COVID-19 patients, the group given the curcumin (Curcumin C3 Complex) and piperine (BioPerine) combination twice a day for two weeks, observed early symptomatic recovery of fever, cough, sore throat, breathlessness, and better ability to maintain oxygen saturation (SpO2) above 94%, compared to the control group.

The findings suggest that the curcumin and piperine combination could be used as adjuvant therapy for COVID-19.

COVID-washing fightback: New Zealand food industry slams ‘weak’ academic accusations

14 Jul 2021

The New Zealand food and grocery industry has lashed out against academic claims that the sector has heavily engaged in ‘COVID-washing’, or used the pandemic to promote ‘unhealthy’ products, calling this an example of ‘confirmation bias’ and ‘not based on genuine evidence’.

The term ‘COVID-washing’ was coined by researchers from the University of Auckland via a research paper published on the subject earlier this year, which accused food and beverage firms of ‘misappropriating the COVID-19 pandemic [to] promote their unhealthy products to vulnerable populations during a time of increased stress and hardship’ – i.e. COVID-washing.

Triple whammy: China palm oil demand expected to rise as soybean takes swine fever, trade war and COVID-19 hit

13 April 2021

China’s demand for palm oil has seen a rise which is expected to continue for some time after major competitor soybean took a hit to supply, demand and prices over the triple threats of COVID-19, the US-China trade war, and African Swine Fever (ASF).

According to Chinese oil industry consultation firm Shanghai Pansun’s General Manager Cai Neng Bin, the local soybean oil industry is in the difficult position of facing a triple threat from not just COVID-19 impacts, but also ASF impacts and the US-China trade war.

“[In addition to] COVID-19 affecting the overall supply chain for soybean imports, [the] China-US trade war has had an impact on China’s soybean imports from the United States, and ASF has impacted soybean-crushing activities [due to a drop in swine and thus] feed demand,” said Cai at the recent Pointers on Price Trends seminar held by the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC).

“China is already seeking alternatives to soybean meal [in view of soybean price hikes], which is sure to [impact this] to a certain extent. [Since] 2018, China has already been increasing oils and fats imports in order to satisfy the supply-demand gap resulted from the reduction in soybean crushing.

NSAJ has just released its 2021 Supermarket White Paper, touted as the ‘most important issue yet’ considering the impacts of COVID-19 on the country’s supermarket industry and consumer choices, with a good part of the report dedicated to the discussion of ways local supermarkets need to adapt moving forward.

“The business environment for supermarkets is becoming harsher and more severe locally, [not only due to] the COVID-19 pandemic but also changes in social environment such as population decline, an ageing population, the entry of e-commerce sites, and economic regression,” the association said via the report.

Japan Consumer Affairs Agency (CCA) is warning general food and health food manufacturers against labelling their products as being effective in preventing or treating COVID-19, to avoid consumer misunderstanding and harming public health.

8 Dec 2020

More studies are emerging of food products as a potential carrier for SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus causing COVID-19, according to new review of the research, but there is no evidence of it leading to transmissions.

So far, global health authorities have reported no evidence of food or food packaging capable of transmitting COVID-19, despite China finding the virus on mostly imported frozen foods from some 20 countries.

Researchers from Iran’s Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Science, said while SARS-CoV-2 may be present in food and even food packaging, it does not necessary mean it was viable and capable of causing infection.

In particular, laboratory studies showed that SARS-CoV-2 remained highly stable under refrigerated conditions (4°C) and freezing conditions (−10 to − 80°C) on fish, meat, poultry, and swine skin, between 14 to 21 days.

According to Chinese government data, November 17 2020 marks the anniversary date that the first-known case of COVID-19 in China can be traced back to in 2019. The disease gained full steam in China during the winter months last year, and fears are rife that if left unchecked, it could run rampant again this year when the cold weather hits.

“Now that we’re entering the winter season, as the weather gets colder and the public spends more time indoors than outdoors, this means that there is a higher chance of people gathering together and also a lack of indoor ventilation,” National Health Commission (NHC) Deputy Director Li Bin said at a government press conference.
